Esther Newcomer, his wife, was working as a nurse at the Dixon State Hospital that evening. Burns Newcomer, his youngest son, was home at the farm several miles north of Hitt. It was a Saturday night and the farmers and city folks were in town for shopping and movies. It had been snowing and there were three of four inches of snow on the streets. Someone called the movies at Dixon, Illinois and an announcement was made over the speakers for John Newcomer, Jr., the oldest son, to come to the box office, where he was informed of his father's heart attack.
Etholene Clingenpeel, latter to become Burns Newcomer's wife, happened to be bowling in another alley at the time John Newcomer, Sr. died. He was buried in Fairmount Cemetery, Polo, Ogle, IL.3 John Newcomer served as Justice of the Peace, 1918-1920, and as Mount Morris Township Clerk, 1928-1930. He served with the Ninth Army in Germany in 1945 and was a member of the Army of Occupation in Berlin, Germany. John was discharged from Army at Camp Grant (Rockford, Illinois) in March 1946.
John Newcomer returned to the University of Illinois, under the GI Bill, in 1946, and graduated in 1950.
From January 1950 to March 1986, when he retired, John worked as a mechanical engineer in Rockford, Illinois. He worked with W. F. & John Barnes Company, Burd Piston Ring Company, Hadees Heater Company, and Atwoood Vacuum Machine Company before going to Amerock Corporation in 1960.
