John REICHARD Senior1037,2296,3598 was born on 4 Nov 1815 in Cearfoss, Washington, MD. Williams, on page 973, listed John Reichard as born on 3 November 1815. On page 1113, Williams listed his county of birth as Dauphin, Maryland and the year as 1816. I have used the more detailed information from page 973. He died on 3 Aug 1881 in Arch Spring, Washington, MD. He died of cancer of the lower hip. John Reichard was a farmer. He never joined a church. Along with his brothers, Valentine and Jacob, his brother-in-law, David Long, and his neighbor, Michael Emmert, he built the Spring Grove school in about 1854.
John Reichard was an abolitionist and president of the local Union League club. Whenever the Confederates came across the river, he left home until they returned to Virginia. In 1861 he was elected county commissioner. A Republican, he served from 1861 to 1867. While on the county commission, he and a majority of the commission supported selling bonds to fund building of the Western Maryland Railroad from Blue Ridge Summit to Hagerstown. They also issued bonds to build the Washington County leg of the Baltimore and O. Railroad. The latter decision was a very controversial.
In 1875 he was elected a judge of the Orphans' Court. He was defeated in a reelection bid in 1879. Parents: Daniel REICHARD Senior and Catharine BALSBAUGH.
