at the opening of the Okla. Strip and filed claim at Ames. Dwight David
Eisenhower's father was a frequent visiter at grandfather Smith's. He
made the trip from Abilene to Ames to preach and always stayed with
grandfather. We found this in his diary when I was in California. They
lived in a sod house & he relates several places where the heavy rains
caused "come ins" to parts of the house. Dad and mom were married at
Ames but, I don't remember by whom but, it was at Dave Moyer's home.

Mary Sophia SMITH.1226 There is confusion concerning Mary Smith's parents. On page 1162 Williams gave conflicting information. He refered to Mary as William Smith's and Nancy Huffer's daughter, but he also listed Mary as the daughter of Joshua Smith (William and Nancy's son) and Sarah Bomershine. Furthermore, Williams said there were 8 children of William and Nancy, but listed only 6, if Mary is Joshua's daughter. I believe the most likely answer is that Mary Smith is William Smith and Nancy Huffer's daughter, and Williams made a punctuation error when he listed Mary as Joshua's daughter. If this is correct, William and Nancy's eighth child is missing. Probably, the missing child is listed, incorrectly, as a child instead of a sibling of one of the other children of William and Nancy.
