He worked as a law and newspaper reporter in Chicago. Among other assignments, he covered the Lincoln-Douglas debates. He also toured Europe. Robert Hitt bought Rock River Seminary in 1873, and later sold it to Melchor Newcomer.
In 1874 President Grant appointed Hitt as the first secretary of the American Legation at Paris, France. President Garfield appoint him Assistant Secretary of State under Secretary Blaine.
