Thomas Johnson's ancestors lived in Norfolk County, England. "The family resided for a considerable time at Great Yarmouth, and members of the family commanded ships in the fleet sent to oppose the Grand Armada when it was threatening England. The Johnsons have been members of the British Parliament, and bailiffs of Yarmouth since 1585. The family was still represented in the Parliament of 1625, which refused to submit to the usurpations of the king."
After the Restoration of King Charles II in 1660, Thomas Johnson received from the king an alteration of the family arms. "Three lions' heads ersed gules, ducally crowned or, on a field argent, between a fess-battled counter battled gules. Creat-a leopard's head on a ducal coronet. Motto--'Trust and Strive.'"

In 1791 he was appointed by President Washington to the United States Supreme Court in 1791. Due to ill health he resigned from the court in 1793. Later, President Washington offered him the post of Secretary of State, but he declined.
